Mnangagwa to release Motlanthe Commission report next week

President Emmerson Mnangagwa today said he is releasing the report of the Commission of Inquiry into the 1 August violence next week.

The commission, which was chaired by former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, had until 19 December to conclude its work.

Six people were killed during the violence and post mortem reports said they died of gun-shot wounds.

The hearings of the commission were public and the military denied that it had killed any of the six.

There were fears that Mnangagwa would not release the report and the United States made the release of the commission’s report one of the four things it would use to assess Zimbabwe’s willingness for reform before it can consider lifting the sanctions it imposed on Zimbabwe 15 years ago.

Mnangagwa told members of his party at their annual conference that he and his team had looked at the report and was releasing it to the public next week.

He reiterated that his party was given the mandate to govern this country and would therefore not enter into any government of national unity.
