Mnangagwa sends condolence message to Dabengwa family

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has sent a message of condolence to the Dabengwa family following the death of one of the liberation icons, Dumiso Dabengwa, whom he said he had huge respect for.

Dabengwa, who had been ill for some time, died in Kenya on his way home from India where he went last month for treatment.

“I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Comrade Dumiso Dabengwa,” Mnangagwa tweeted.

“I had huge respect for Dumiso and his contribution to Zimbabwe: As a liberation fighter, a long standing Minister of Home Affairs & as a man. My deepest condolences are with his friends and family at this sad time.”

It will be interesting to see if Mnangagwa’s government will declare Dabengwa a hero as he seems to have departed from the practice of his predecessor who refused to grant national hero status to people like Ndabaningi Sithole who founded ZANU.

Mnangagwa has already appointed non-political icons like singer Oliver Mtukudzi and academic Phinias Makhurane as national heroes although they were buried at their homes.
