Mnangagwa says Mugabe will continue to be respected as Zimbabwe’s founding father

President Emmerson Mnangagwa today said former President Robert Mugabe, who is currently in Singapore receiving medical attention, will continue to be respected as the founding father of modern Zimbabwe.

He said this in Mugabe’s home area, Zvimba, where he held his first “thank you” rally after winning the 30 July elections.

Mnangagwa garnered more than 312 000 votes in the province and his party won 18 out of the 22 Parliamentary seats.

The President said Mugabe led the revolution from 1977 when he was elected leader of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front until last year when he was removed because he had been surrounded by people who did not know the revolutionary thrust of the party.

Mnangagwa said the government will continue to look after Mugabe and will provide whatever he needs.

Mugabe turns 95 in February.

Mnangagwa said that he had been advised that Mugabe will be back in the country next Friday.
