Mnangagwa says 158 bodies recovered in Mozambique after Cyclone Idai

President Emmerson Mnangagwa today said his government was trying as much as possible to account for about 300 people that went missing after Cyclone Idai hit Zimbabwe three weeks ago leaving nearly 270 dead.

Chimanimani and Chipinge were the worst affected areas in Zimbabwe which were devastated by the cyclone which hit Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Mnangagwa said the Mozambican government had identified 158 bodies so far and had taken pictures of each so that relatives can identify them so that they can be removed from the list of missing persons.

The President visited Chimanimani today with leaders of some opposition parties including Thokozani Khupe of the Movement for Democratic Change-Tsvangirai and Lovemore Madhuku of the National Constitutional Alliance who comes from Chipinge.

Mnangagwa said the people of Zimbabwe were united by Cyclone Idai because it had affected everyone regardless of their totem or political affiliation.

The President said some of the people would have to be relocated to safer areas and the government would assist in building stronger houses.

The leader of the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change Nelson Chamisa did not accompany Mnangagwa.

He does not recognise Mnangagwa and is busy collecting donations for the cyclone survivors.
