Mnangagwa retains Chirumanzu-Zibagwe seat

Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s wife, Auxillia, has won the Chirumanzu-Zibagwe seat which the vice-president surrendered on being appointed President Robert Mugabe’s deputy.  In a one-sided contest, Auxillia polled 16 092 votes with her nearest rival Abigail Musambasi of Transform Zimbabwe getting only 456 votes.  Three other candidates polled even less with Wilbros Kanoti Chawaona polling 257 votes, Gadzamwoyo Dewa of Good People’s Movement, 89 votes, and Munashe Mutodza of the National Constitutional Assembly walking away with only 79 votes. There were 35 827 registered voters in Chirumanzu-Zibagwe.  Emmerson Mnangagwa polled 17 996 votes in the 2013 elections. Results for the other constituency, Mount Darwin West, are still to be announced. By-elections for another 16 seats will be held on 10 June, unless they are nullified by the Constitutional Court. The seats were created by the firing of two Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front legislators and 14 by the expulsion of former Movement for Democratic Change rebels.
