Mnangagwa releases Motlanthe Commission report

President Emmerson Mnangagwa today released the Motlanthe Commission report into the violence of 1 August in which six people were killed.

The commission said that although the deployment of the military was justified, the use of live ammunition and shambocks was not.

It also said the demonstrations which led to the deployment of the military after police were overwhelmed were planned as the demonstrators brought various sorts of weapons.

The commission said the elections were free, peaceful and fair.

It said statements by politicians threatening chaos if the elections did not produce the results they wanted contributed to the violence.

A total of 35 people were injured during the violence, 23 from gunshot wounds.

As promised the full commission report and a transcript of the hearing which is 1 290 pages has been posted on the commission website: www.postelectionviolencecommission.gov.zw
