Mnangagwa coming back to discuss handover with Mugabe

The Zimbabwe Defence Forces says President Robert Mugabe and former Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa have started talking and Mnangagwa will be coming back to the country shortly.

In a statement ZDF said following Mugabe’s address to the nation last night, which left a lot of people disappointed as they expected him to announce his resignation, the ZDF and Mugabe had held further consultations to agree on a roadmap on the prevailing situation in the country.

“The Zimbabwe Defence and Security Services are encouraged by new developments which include contact between the President and the former Vice-President, Cde ED Mnangagwa, who is expected in the country shortly,” the statement said.

“Thereafter, the nation will be advised on the outcome of the talks between the two. In the meantime, His Excellence and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Cde RG Mugabe has started processes towards a definitive solution and roadmap for the country.”

The ZDF urged Zimbabweans to remain calm and patient as this process happened and to fully observe and respect the laws of the country for the sustenance of peace which the country should never lose.

“The Zimbabwe Defence and Security Services further urge other political players, including members of the ruling ZANU-PF, the veterans of the liberation struggle, opposition groups, students, and the generality of our people to refrain from any actions or activities that would threaten the peace, life and property.

“Students at the country’s various institutions are encouraged to be calm and to proceed with their educational programmes as scheduled. THEY NEED TO REMEMBER THAT ONE DAY OF EDUCATION LOST IS DIFFICULT TO RECOVER”

The statement comes after ZANU-PF Members of Parliament met to discuss the impeachment of Mugabe for refusing to resign.

While impeachment is usually a long process, the legislators said they could do it within two days

Reports said 230 MPs were ready to vote for the impeachment.

The war veterans association was also threatening to organise demonstrations to push Mugabe out and warned that the military might have to shoot ordinary citizens to protect Mugabe from the people.

Students at the University of Zimbabwe today refused to write examinations until Mugabe had stepped down and his wife stripped of the doctorate degree she was awarded.
