Mnangagwa bails out Grace Mugabe

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is reported to have asked his government to charter a plane for former First Lady Grace Mugabe to fly from Singapore to attend her mother’s funeral and thus avoid the inconvenience of scheduled flights.

Grace’s mother died last Thursday.

The former First Lady was in Singapore where she was receiving treatment.

Former President Robert Mugabe advised Mnangagwa that his wife was in Singapore receiving treatment when he sent his daughter Bona and her husband Simba Chikore to attend Mnangagwa’s inauguration on their behalf.

News of the gesture was confirmed by National Patriotic Front spokesman Jealousy Mawarire who tweeted: “I want 2 thank Pres @edmnangagwa & his presidium 4 facilitating the travel of former First Lady Dr Mugabe back home for the funeral of Ambuya Marufu. Such a gesture is very invaluable & much appreciated.May the Lord keep u,lift up His countenance upon u & give u peace.(Nu 6:24-26)”

Some of his twitter followers questioned whether the tweet had been written by Mawarire, a strong critic of Mnangagwa.

He responded: “You mean I can’t appreciate a good thing?  I criticise when I see wrong and appreciate when good is done.  I am always truthful.”

Several people praised Mnangagwa for his gesture, though others said he was just using taxpayer’s money, with George Rugare Chinga writing: “Give him the kudos. The man plays smart politics. He is ticking all the right boxes. He restored MT’s diplomatic passport and paid for his medical and funeral expenses. Now he has extended this gesture to Grace +Bob not withstanding their politics. He will surely confound many.”
