Mnangagwa appeals for peace as police clash with MDC supporters in Harare

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appealed for peace and called on everyone to desist from provocative declarations as the country waits for the results of the presidential elections held on Monday.

His party, the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front, has just won a two-thirds majority in the national assembly.

His main rival Nelson Chamisa of the Movement for Democratic Change Alliance insists he won the presidential vote but so far he was won 61 of the 210 seats and is likely to claim the three still outstanding.

“At this crucial time, I call on everyone to desist from provocative declarations and statements. We must all demonstrate patience and maturity, and act in a way that puts our people and their safety first. Now is the time for responsibility and above all, peace,” Mnangagwa tweeted.

Chamisa threatened havoc if he is not declared the winner of the elections, and it looks he is smelling defeat following his party’s dismal performance in the national assembly.

He claims that the vote was rigged.
