MDC-T youths resort to social media to topple Mugabe

The youth assembly of Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change has launched a social media campaign dubbed #MYZIMBABWE to bring down Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe by the end of next month.

“We have been left with no choice but to start a campaign whose mission is to liberate our Zimbabwe from a clueless and greedy clique that only thinks about itself and nothing else,” the youths said in a statement released yesterday.

“We urge all citizens to embrace the month of heroes, the month of August as a month of action to liberate ourselves from Robert Mugabe. This country will remain ungovernable as long as Robert Mugabe and ZANU-PF does not heed the call.”

The youth called on the security forces and the judiciary to listen to their conscience and think of their children who were failing to go to schools, their brothers who were failing to make ends meet and their mothers who were failing to get a decent meal before they rose up to support Mugabe.

“The security forces have not been spared by the economic challenges we face. We go to the same bank queues, to the same dilapidated clinics, to the same kombis yet a few are eating and enjoying on our behalf.

“Enough is enough, come join the masses .This revolution will require the assistance of everyone to succeed and as you get deployed this August to fight the people, we urge you to put down your arms and join the ordinary people as we push for the final onslaught of the regime,” the youth said.

The youths applauded Pastor Evans Mawarire of #ThisFlag and other social activists like #Sesijikile/Tajamuka adding that that the 31 August deadline given to Robert Mugabe to step down motivated them to do more to liberate their country.

The social media has been credited with paralysing the country during its one-day shutdown, but the State media has played this down saying most of the civil servants turned up for work or had no money for transport.

Former United States ambassador to Zimbabwe Charles Ray, disclosed nearly five years ago, that social media was a powerful tool that could be used to mobilize Zimbabwe’s youths.

The Zimbabwean government, however, seems to already have the machinery to switch off major social media platforms like whatsapp and the internet.
