The Movement for Democratic Change has rubbished claims in the State-controlled media that the party and former army commander General Solomon Mujuru are agents of the West saying it is a party that is firmly rooted in Zimbabwe and will continue to push for a Zimbabwe-centred agenda until the “corrupt and bankrupt ZANU-PF regime is lawfully and constitutionally removed from power”.
In a statement today, party spokesman Obert Gutu said no amount of puerile and vexatious mudslinging by the collapsing ZANU-PF regime will dissuade the MDC from continuing with its peaceful and democratic struggle for the establishment of a new Zimbabwe.
“The people of Zimbabwe deserve a new beginning; a fresh and brand new start,” Gutu said. “The MDC is the government-in-waiting and we are not going to disappoint the long-suffering masses of Zimbabwe. Victory is within touching distance. The enemy is cornered and vanquished.”
The State-controlled media has trashed the MDC-T and Mujuru following the proposed coalition between the country’s main opposition and the Zimbabwe People First party which saw former Vice-President Joice Mujuru joining hands with MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai at the weekend.
“The ZANU-PF-controlled media has gone into overdrive trying to propagate the false and frivolous story that the MDC and the late General Mujuru are/were agents of the West; whatever that means,” Gutu said.
“We would like to make it abundantly clear that the MDC is a lawfully registered and legitimate political party that has always advocated for peaceful, democratic change in Zimbabwe.
“We are a party that is firmly rooted in Zimbabwe and we shall continue to fearlessly push forward a Zimbabwe-centred agenda until the corrupt and bankrupt ZANU-PF regime is lawfully and constitutionally removed from power.”
Activists have given President Robert Mugabe until the end of this month to step down. Opposition parties have announced that they will carry out a massive demonstration next week.
The army, on which Mugabe has relied for the past decade, has warned activists and opposition parties from creating chaos.
