MDC-T salutes war veterans for seeing the light at last

The Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai yesterday saluted Zimbabwe’s war veterans for publicly acknowledging that President Robert Mugabe has outlived his relevance and as such should immediately resign.

War veterans broke ranks with Mugabe, their patron, on Thursday accusing him of being a dictator and ditching them in favour of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front youth league which organised the million-man match and demonstrated its support for Mugabe on Wednesday.

The war veterans said they were shocked and dismayed at the dictatorial tendencies of Mugabe and his cohorts which had “slowly devoured the values of the liberation struggle” and accused Mugabe of deliberately neglecting and abandoning the masses, who were the bedrock of the party.

“Suddenly, ideologically bankrupt million man marches are being organized in honour of bankrupt leadership! The same leadership has failed to address the bread and butter issues which stick out like a sore thumb,” they said in a statement.

The MDC-T called upon Mugabe to take heed of the very clear advice that he had been freely given by his erstwhile comrades, the war veterans.

“Mugabe remains the single biggest threat to Zimbabwe's national political stability as well as economic prosperity,” the main opposition party said.

“It is not too late for him to proceed to step down immediately so that the country can be in a position to move forward. Zimbabweans are now united in their quest for a fresh start, a new beginning.”

The party said Mugabe was no longer part of the solution but had become part of the problem.

“As the country enters the homestretch in our peaceful and democratic fight for the establishment of a new Zimbabwe, we truly hope and trust that all Zimbabweans will appreciate the need to immediately retire the incompetent and clueless ZANU-PF regime, warts and all.

“The regime is damaged goods and no amount of political spin can successfully camouflage the underlying rot and decay that pervades all facets of the ZANU-PF regime.”
