MDC-T applauds churches for calling on Mugabe to step down

The Movement for Democratic Change-Tsvangirai has applauded churches for calling on President Robert Mugabe to step down to allow the country to move forward.

In a statement, church leaders representing various organisations said Zimbabwe deserved leaders who had the interests of the people at heart.

“The MDC unequivocally applauds the recent initiative taken by various churches in Zimbabwe in their quest to find a lasting solution to the Zimbabwe political and socio-economic crisis,” the MDC-T said.

“We take cognisance of the bold move taken by these gallant men and women of the cloth in joining a growing chorus from across the nation for an urgent solution to the crisis facing Zimbabwe.”

“The intervention by the churches could not have come at a better time, when the country’s economy and governance system has virtually collapsed leading to untold suffering of the majority of people. As shepherd of these suffering people in Christ, it is appropriate that the church should superintend over the physical, intellectual, social and economic well being of the same people.

“We call upon the church to step up their efforts in ensuring that the people of Zimbabwe are afforded their right to a decent, enjoyable and prosperous life in a dignified and more peaceful environment.”

The MDC-T  has also called on Mugabe to step down and call for fresh elections which will be supervised by the United Nations.

MDC applauds move by churches

The MDC unequivocally applauds the recent initiative taken by various churches in Zimbabwe in their quest to find a lasting solution to the Zimbabwe political and socio-economic crisis. We take cognisance of the bold move taken by these gallant men and women of the cloth in joining a growing chorus from across the nation for an urgent solution to the crisis facing Zimbabwe.

The MDC welcomes the convergence of ideas from the diverse backgrounds of various groupings which defines the broader spectrum of the Zimbabwean populace. Our philosophy is premised on the understanding that politics is a vocation which refers to the activities and efforts to create, maintain and expand space for the growth and fulfillment of people’s aspirations and the church is no exception in this endeavor.

The intervention by the churches could not have come at a better time, when the country’s economy and governance system has virtually collapsed leading to untold suffering of the majority of people. As shepherd of these suffering people in Christ, it is appropriate that the church should superintend over the physical, intellectual, social and economic well being of the same people.

We call upon the church to step up their efforts in ensuring that the people of Zimbabwe are afforded their right to a decent, enjoyable and prosperous life in a dignified and more peaceful environment.

 For the past 36 years, the people of Zimbabwe have been denied this God given privilege under the abusive and insipidly corrupt Zanu PF regime. The church in Zimbabwe must be emboldened by the fact that no one has a right to shut out other people from collaborating with God in making the world a better, more just and more peaceful place. We look forward to a broader and more inclusive endeavor in the quest for a lasting solution to the Zimbabwean crisis.

As the MDC we call for the immediate resignation of President Mugabe and his entire corrupt cabinet to pave way for fresh elections which should be monitored by the United Nations with the active participation of both the AU and SADC.
