MDC calls of Harare demos

The Movement for Democratic Change has called off the demonstrations in Harare which were supposed to kick off this morning following a High Court ruling which upheld the police ban on the demonstrations which police feared might turn violent.

MDC vice-president Tendai Biti said, however, demonstrations planned for Bulawayo on Monday, Gweru on Tuesday, Masvingo on Wednesday and Mutare on Thursday would go ahead.

Police claimed that they did not have enough manpower to handle the demonstrations in Harare.

Commenting on the High Court ruling on his twitter handle Biti said: “The prohibition by the Zimbabwe Republic Police of our #FreeZimbabweMarch is unlawful & unconstitutional. It exposes the true colors of this regime. That this is a fascist authoritarian regime without respect to civil & political rights. A regime without shame.”

Biti, like his boss Nelson Chamisa, is a lawyer.
