MDC blasts ZBC on its coverage of election violence

The Movement for Democratic Change Alliance has blasted the state broadcaster the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation for trying to push the blame on last week’s post-election violence that left six people dead on the opposition party.

In a statement the opposition party said the ZBC was in fact inciting people instead of waiting for an investigation into the killings which was promised by President-Elect Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The MDC’s statement followed a report on ZBC-television in which an eye witness claimed that the opposition party had been dishing out beer to its supporters before the violence broke out.

“Such attempts are diabolical in nature and cannot be excused at any level. It is a known fact that soldiers gunned down and killed seven and injured 13 unarmed civilians in Central Harare,” the party said.

Although the party said seven people were killed, police have so far only confirmed the deaths of six.

“May the so called eye witness on ZBC produce evidence of beer coming out of our head office,” the party said.

“If anything, such evidence must be used in the court of law and not in the public media. This in itself is inciting.

“Such innuendos being exuded by the ZBC will not stop the MDC Alliance from pursuing legal means to reclaim the people’s victory.

“The people of Zimbabwe overwhelmingly voted for the people’s President Nelson Chamisa and the MDC alliance at all levels and we are not prepared to betray the people’s victory because of a small cabal that thinks it owns Zimbabwe,” the statement said.
