The Morgan Tsvangirai faction of the Movement for Democratic Change has filed an application with the Constitutional Court to stop any elections, including the by-elections scheduled for March, until the Electoral Act is aligned with the Constitution of Zimbabwe. The party argues that any election before completing electoral reforms is unconstitutional. Nominations for by-elections in Mt Darwin West and Chirumanzu-Zibagwe closed on January 29. Nine candidates will be contesting the polls but the major opposition parties including all three factions of the MDC did not submit any nominations. MDC-T secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora, who is a lawyer, said the voters’ roll was still “fatally defective” and civil servants like the police must not be involved in the voting process, like in helping so-called illiterate voters.
