Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor John Mangudya has denied reports of a rift between him and Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube saying they are in fact “long time buddies”.
There has been wide speculation that Mangudya and Ncube do not see eye to eye and this is one of the reasons why the country is experiencing economic problems.
Economist Eddie Gross even accused Mangudya of sabotaging Ncube’s reform programme.
Mangudya whose term was renewed at the beginning of this month told the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation that he will focus on curbing inflation and money supply during his second and final term.
“We are in a very tight economic situation but let us put into perspective where this economy is coming from. We have stood firmly on the ground to ensure that the economy gets back to a growth trajectory,” Mangudya told the ZBC.
On the rift with Ncube he said: “What people do not know is that Professor Ncube and I are longtime buddies and all the talk of tension with him are mischievous lies. We actually were in the same class at the University of Zimbabwe.”
