Man who rescued Mnangagwa when he fled Mugabe convicted of tax fraud

A Zimbabwean businessman based in South Africa who rescued President Emmerson Mnangagwa when he fled from Zimbabwe after being fired from the government was last month convicted of tax fraud.

The Sunday Mail today reported that Justice Peace Maphosa who owns Big Time Strategic Consultants and Computer Ink and Media Solutions was convicted of prejudicing the South African Revenue Service of R843 080.40 through fraudulent tax invoices between January 2009 and April 2011.

He was sentenced to eight years in jail which was wholly suspended on condition that he repays the full amount in 60 instalments of $14 051.34 per month from the first of this month.

President Mnangagwa announced that he was saved by Maphosa when he addressed Zimbabwean business people based in South Africa three weeks after being sworn in as Zimbabwe’s new leader.

The Sunday Mail did not mention Maphosa’s link to Mnangagwa.

It said Maphosa shot to prominence in Zimbabwe after launching the Gwanda Gospel Festival and sponsoring elite beauty pageants – Miss Tourism Zimbabwe and Miss World Zimbabwe.

Maphosa, the paper said, was also the headline sponsor for the Harare International Carnival.
