Khupe MPs asked to declare assets

Zimbabwe Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda last week asked newly sworn in Members of Parliament to register their assets in terms of Section 8 of the Code of Conduct and Ethics for Members of Parliament as read together with Standing Order No. 50 of the Standing Rules and Orders of the National Assembly.

“Standing Order No. 50 states that it is a statutory requirement that every Member registers his or her proprietary interest within 60 days of the date of opening of the new Parliament and where a Member is appointed after the opening of the Parliament, the disclosure is to be done within 60 days after his or her appointment as a Member,” Mudenda said.

The new legislators include Movement for Democratic Change- Tsvangirai interim leader Thokozani Khupe who joined the lower house with six others while eight of her members were sworn in as senators.

They replaced MDC Alliance members who had been recalled for refusing to accept Khupe’s leadership.

Mudenda also said legislators who had already declared their assets should update their declarations if they had acquired new properties since that declaration.
