Jonathan Moyo says violence begets violence following attempt on Mnangagwa

Exiled former G40 member Jonathan Moyo said today’s explosion at White Stadium in Bulawayo where President Emmerson Mnangagwa was addressing a rally was a tragic reminder that the use of tanks, bombs, grenades and guns to settle a political contest was barbaric.

Commenting on the explosion in which 8 people are reported to have been injured when Mnangagwa and his team were leaving the rally, Moyo said: “Today’s explosion at White City Stadium in Byo is a tragic reminder that the use of tanks, bombs, grenades & guns by whosoever against anyone to settle a political contest is barbaric. Nov 15, 2017 set a dangerous paradigm for politics in Zimbabwe. Violence begets violence. Sad!”

Mnangagwa has said elections scheduled for 30 July are going ahead as scheduled.

“Let us continue to be united and address our differences peacefully,” he tweeted. “The strongest response to violence is peace. The strongest response to hate is love.”

“The campaign has been conducted in a free and peaceful environment, and we will not allow this cowardly act to get in our way as we move towards elections.”

According to the Sunday Mail among those injured are: Vice President Kembo Mohadi,  Zanu-PF national chairman Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri,  national commissar Engelbert Rugeje, Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga’s wife, Marry.

“VP Chiwenga had slight bruises on his face but he is fine. Four security personnel and some chiefs were also injured so all in all we are talking of 8 or 9 people who have been injured,” Presidential spokesman George Charamba said.
