Information Minister Jonathan Moyo yesterday said Zimbabwe’s constitution was the supreme law of the land so there was no need to spend too much time talking about re-aligning laws to the new constitution as this took a very long time.
Responding to a question at the Bulawayo Press Club about when Zimbabwe’s media laws would be re-aligned to the new constitution, Moyo said Zimbabweans should be happy that they had a new constitution.
“Be happy that it overrides all laws. Be happy that it is working. Don’t worry about re-alignment. That is a paper and pencil exercise. If you are not happy with any law we have a Constitutional Court and you can take up your case there,” he said.
Moyo said instead of concentrating on re-alignment, his ministry would probably look at news laws to enact or those that should be reviewed.
He said the Constitutional Court had, for example, voided criminal defamation. There was no need for his ministry to look into that issue any longer because it had been struck off.
