Jonathan Moyo not off the hook yet

Zimbabwe’s Highest Court has referred Higher Education Minister Jonathan Moyo back to the magistrate’s court to answer charges levelled against him by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission.

The charges include criminal abuse of office, fraud, corrupt concealment of personal interests in a transaction and obstruction of the course of justice.

They were levelled against him after ZACC found that Moyo had allegedly defrauded the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund, which falls under his ministry, of about $400 000.

Moyo took his case to the Constitutional Court arguing that ZACC had no powers to arrest him.

Chief Justice Luke Malaba said Moyo had jumped the gun.

Moyo, like any other citizen, should appear before a magistrate to challenge the lawfulness of his arrest.

First Lady Grace Mugabe recently told a ZANU-PF rally that Moyo had no case to answer.

Legislator Temba Mliswa told Parliament this week that the First Lady had no executive powers and should not be seen to be condoning corruption.
