A charged with rape had this to say in his defence: “Your worship, there was a witch terrorising men in our area. The complainant entered into my house late at night while I was asleep. When I saw the naked figure I knew it was the witch and I rushed for an axe to chop her but realised that I would kill her. I dropped the axe and picked up a spear but I also decided not to use it because I was equally going to kill her. I picked up a knobkerrie but I refrained from using it as it was going to injure her. I then decided that the best way to deal wither was to punish her without injuring her. It was for this reason that I decide to use my friendly weapon.”
