Forget about the sexual exploits of Mel Reynolds, who one American online publication described as America’s most perverted ex-congressman, the big question is how the hell did he get away with a US$24 500 hotel bill?
Strange things seem to be happening in Zimbabwe of late. People earning half a million dollars a month in a country where the majority of people are living on less than two dollars a day; entertainment allowances of US$3 000 a month, more than the annual income of junior civil servants; and pastors sleeping with every woman they can lay their hands on.
And now you get a story that an ex-congressman with a criminal record has an outstanding bill of US$24 500 with two hotels. How in the hell was he allowed to accumulate such a huge bill? How was the hotel expecting to get paid?
Looking at what the guy was allegedly doing at the hotels, the hotels should be investigated too. They would not have allowed the man to stay that long, owe that much, with the hive of activity in his rooms, unless they were assured they would be paid.
But how? The hotels must answer. US$24 000 is a lot of money, especially when you consider how vendors fight for customers just to get one dollar
