Harare water rehabilitation to halve its power bill

Harare City Council expects to cut its electricity bill by up to fifty percent upon the completion of its $144 million Chinese-funded rehabilitation of its Morton Jeffrey plant, an official has said.

The rehabilitation works include replacing the plant’s old equipment with more modern power efficient equipment.

As of October last year the city owed power utility ZESA in excess of $70 million.

The city’s spokesman Michael Chideme said today that an upgrade of the system would halve the plant’s monthly electricity bill of up to $1 million.

“In addition to improving the whole system which is old, the new pumps we are installing are going to be power efficient, reducing our electricity burden by up to fifty percent,” he said.

Rehabilitation of the plant is expected to improve the city’s water production capacity to 650 million liters per day from the current 450 million litres.- The Source
