Gweru city council sues companies, residents as defaults hit $55 million

The Gweru City Council has launched legal proceedings against companies and individuals after arrears spiked to over $55 million.

Town Clerk Elizabeth Gwatipedza said the council has to date issued 2 378 summons to defaulting companies and residents through the clerk of court in an effort to recover the money.

“Number of summons issued to date is 2 378 for amounts of $3 953 776. Number of default judgments to date is 1 394 amounting to $2 730 485 and the number of executions to date is 53. This means council can send a messenger of court and attach property to recover its money,” she told said.

She added that only domestic and commercial defaulters with debts from $500 upwards have been targetted.

As at June 30, residents owed council a total of $20.4 million for water and rates, non-domestic debtors stood at $16.1 million while defaults for rent and on commercial properties stood at $18.6 million. – The Source
