Grace on top-updated

First lady Grace Mugabe has been confirmed as the leader of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front Women’s League. Her appointment was approved by acclamation. Grace only came to the political front at the party’s women congress when leader Oppah Muchinguri stepped down to give way to her. It later transpired that this was a plot to oust Vice-President Joice Mujuru, President Robert Mugabe’s number two, who was accused of plotting to oust Mugabe. Grace’s rise also led to wide speculation that she was aiming for Mujuru’s post in an effort to maintain a Mugabe dynasty. But her appointment as secretary for the women’s league means that she can only become a member of the powerful politburo but cannot rise to vice-president and second secretary. The rest of the ZANU-PF will be appointed today, but Mugabe could take his time since he has now been granted powers to appoint his team. Previously all top leaders were elected by congress. Addressing the congress  the First Lady said that  she was surprised that some people were opposed to her elevation to secretary for the women’s league, when Mugabe’s first wife, Sally, was also secretary of the women’s league. She said one of those opposed to her appointment was Mujuru. When Mujuru learnt about her nomination, Grace said Mujuru said: “Pembe yapiwa benzi.”
