Grace Mugabe’s case in court today

The case of Zimbabwe First Lady Grace Mugabe, in which she is accused of assaulting a 20-year-old South African model, will be heard at the High Court in Pretoria today in what the model’s lawyer said are “preliminary interlocutory proceedings”.

According to reports from South Africa, Afriforum, an Afrikaaner human rights group that is representing the model, will be asking the court for permission to cite Grace Mugabe as a respondent in an assault case involving the model, Gabriella Engels.

Mugabe is accused of assaulting Engels last month but says the model, who was drunk, assaulted her with a knife.

She says she rushed to the hotel where her two sons were with the model to protect her children from the model.

Grace Mugabe was granted diplomatic immunity to enable her to leave South Africa to stop the police from arresting her.

Afriforum is challenging that immunity and wants Grace to appear in court failing which it says it will institute private prosecution.

Grace is currently in the United States with her husband where President Robert Mugabe is attending the United Nations general Assembly summit.

Mugabe ad his wife are banned from entering into the United States, under sanctions imposed in 2003,  except on United Nations business.
