Grace Mugabe hands herself over to South African police

First Lady Grace Mugabe today handed herself over to the South African police over allegations that she assaulted a young woman who is said to have visited her two sons at a hotel in the upmarket suburb of Sandton in Johannesburg.

The 20-year-old Gabriella Engels said the First Lady assaulted her with an extension cord on Sunday.

According to Newsweek, South Africa's National Police Minister Fikile Mbalula confirmed that the Zimbabwean first lady had “handed herself over” to police and was due in court this afternoon.

The incident has received wide condemnation in South Africa with a Gauteng legislator Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane saying:  “I am deeply appalled and devastated by the allegations of assault on a young woman by Grace Mugabe.

“It is worrying especially since the assault happened during the month when we commemorate women for their role in the liberation struggle.

“Also, it is aggravated by the fact that the incident has been committed by someone with a high social standing in society.

“No one has a right to abuse women irrespective of situations they find themselves in.

“People of Grace’s caliber were supposed to live an exemplary life and be a role model to inspire young women.”
