End of the road for Bhasikiti

Former Mwenezi East Member of Parliament Kudakwashe Bhasikiti had his case in which he was challenging his expulsion from the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front thrown out by the Supreme Court yesterday.

According to the Daily News Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku told Bhasikiti to form his own political party because the court could not mend a broken marriage.

Bhasikiti was expelled from the party together with six others in May joining five others who had been expelled earlier for trying to oust President Robert Mugabe.

Those expelled were accused of supporting a faction led by former Vice-President Joice Mujuru.

Bhasikiti’s case was first dismissed by High Court Judge Chinembiri Bhunu who said he had not exhausted all the channels open to him to challenge his expulsion within the party’s structures.

The Supreme Court agreed with Justice Bhunu saying:  “The court, having considered the papers filed of record and the submissions by counsel, has unanimously come to the conclusion that the appeal is without merit and is hereby dismissed with costs. Reasons for the order will be availed in due course.”

The dismissal of the case by the Supreme Court shuts the doors for other expelled members of ZANU-PF. Former Mbire legislator David Butau is also challenging his expulsion.
