Elections on 31 July

The Constitutional Court today stuck by its previous ruling and ordered that elections be held on 31 July. Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s spokesman Luke Tamborinyoka has accepted the court ruling.

“For the avoidance of doubt, elections should proceed on the 31st of July in terms of the proclamation by the President of Zimbabwe in compliance with the order of this court,” Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku said.

Tamborinyoka said since the court had ruled, “it means we have to go by that date.”

Finance Minister Tendai Biti insisted yesterday that the country had no money to hold the elections.

Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chief Rita Makarau said part from the money her body was ready for the elections.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Tuesday his government would use its leverage and influence to secure a proper election in Zimbabwe.
