Dozen land barons from four housing cooperatives arrested

Twelve land barons from four housing cooperatives who have allegedly been duping home seekers and illegally selling land have been arrested.

According to the Herald, those arrested were:

  • Andrew Mugomezi and Tendai Mutukwa of Vanhuvatema Housing Cooperative;
  • Robert Tinaye Chihota, Stanford Shadreck Nyemba, David Stanley Chidenga and Thomas Musandiri of Epworth Mission Development Trust;
  • Conciliar Dzitiro, Wellington Ngenje, Privilege Murebwa and Blessing Matwaya of Pungwe Chimurenga Housing Cooperative; and
  • Jaricha Edmon and Jane Mabota of from Hannah Housing Cooperative.

Police spokesman Paul Nyathi said the operation was an on-going exercise targeting land barons who have been duping unsuspecting desperate people.

He urged those who were duped by any land baron to go to the nearest police station and make a report.

“We are aware that some of the suspects will try to resist arrest. We are urging them to comply with the police as the operation continues,” he said.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police assures members of the public that the law will certainly take its course on anyone who is involved in criminal acts of pegging, parcelling out land and offering it to people fraudulently.”
