Don’t take Mugabe seriously- Mnangagwa

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged people not to take former President Robert Mugabe seriously because he is now too old.

According to Newsday, he told delegates in Rwanda this week that he was also unfazed by reports that Mugabe was backing an opposition party called the National Patriotic Front which was headed by former Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs Minister Ambrose Mutinhiri and is backed by G40 a Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front faction that was solidly behind Mugabe and his wife.

“He is now 94 and he may not remember that he did not cast his vote for me if you ask him today,” Mnangagwa told his audience.

“He is our founding father and we will not bother about those things because we know if you ask him again, he will tell you ‘No, no, no! I will always vote ED.”

Mnangagwa recounted a conversation he had with Mugabe just after he had been fired from the government and had sought exile in South Africa.

“So while I was in South Africa, the President called me and said: ‘Emmerson. Where are you?’

‘In South Africa’.

What are you doing there?

‘You fired me . . . you fired me last week’.

He said he was not aware he had fired me and I needed to come back home so we could resolve issues.”

Mugabe held a press conference with foreign journalists last week at which he said he had been removed in a coup and this was a disgrace that had to be undone.
