Delta Zimbabwe to brew Chibuku in South Africa

Delta Corporation, one of the biggest listed companies on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, is to brew its popular sorghum beer, Chibuku, in South Africa.

The company, now part of the Anheuser-Busch InBev, is buying Diageo’s South African sorghum-beer brewer, United National Breweries.

Bloomberg reports that the purchase, the terms of which were not given, will be Delta’s first acquisition in South Africa and its second outside Zimbabwe.

It bought Zambia’s National Breweries, also a brewer of sorghum beer, in January.

Delta was part of South African Breweries before that company merged with Miller to form SAB-Miller which in turn was acquired by AB InBev in 2016.

Delta Zimbabwe is the largest beverage company in the country and brews both clear beer and sorghum beer.

In its half yearly report for September, Delta said lager volume went up by 54 percent in six months while sorghum volumes were up 2 percent. It said volumes were affected by shortage of containers.

In Zambia, volumes were up 13 percent.
