Deadline for registration of unregistered vehicles to remain at 31 October unless…..

The Deputy Minister of Transport Michael Madanha says the registration of all unregistered vehicles remains at 31 October unless the minister, Joram Gumbo, decides to extend the deadline.

He was responding to a question by Mutoko South legislator David Chapfika who asked the ministry to extend the deadline to the end of the year as this was a serious national programme.

Madanha said people must register their vehicles within the stipulated period. The current cut-off-date is 31 October, he said.

The government estimates that there are about 500 000 unregistered vehicles out of 1.2 million in the country.

Those who do not register their vehicles risk losing them, as they might be auctioned by the government.

*MR. CHAPFIKA: Thank you Madam Speaker. The issue of unregistered vehicles in this country is a very big issue. Some of these cars have their engines down, some are in garages whilst some are under repair. This is a national programme such that one month will be inadequate to complete the process. My appeal is for the Ministry to reconsider extending this programme so that it will stretch until the end of the year. Is it possible hon. Minister?

Currently, our cut-off date for the registration of vehicles is 31 October and we urge all people whose vehicles are unregistered to do so during that period. If any extension period may be given, the decision rests upon the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Hon. Dr. Gumbo whom I report to. As of now, the deadline is 31st October, 2015. I thank you.
