D-Day for MDC-T factions

The Supreme Court is today expected to hear the case between the two factions of the Movement for Democratic Change-Tsvangirai in which the Nelson Chamisa faction is seeking to bar the Thokozani-Khupe from using the MDC-T name and symbols.

Judge Francis Bere earlier ruled that the case was not urgent but the Chamisa faction appealed with Chief Justice Luke Malaba saying the case must be heard as a matter of urgency today.

Bere who was a High Court judgeighCourt has since been promoted to the Supreme Court.

The Khupe faction has been arguing that it does not recognise Nelson Chamisa as the new party leader because he was appointed unconstitutionally.

The faction has since held its own congress at which Khupe was confirmed as leader and Obert Gutu, who is also one of the respondents as her deputy.

The Chamisa faction feels the matter must be resolved urgently because it is likely to confuse voters should the two parties contest under the same name, though it appears the Chamisa faction will be contesting as part of the MDC Alliance.

Scores of Chamisa supporters are reported to have gathered outside the Supreme Court and are accusing Khupe of selling out.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said he will announce the election by the end of this month which is only 11 days away.
