The number of coronavirus deaths and new cases dropped today as Zimbabwe extended its strict lockdown by two weeks to 15 February.

The number of deaths dropped from 38 yesterday to 18 bringing the total so far to 1 178.

There were 306 new cases today raising the total to date to 32 952. But, 453 people recovered reducing the number of active cases to 6 902.

So far 24 872 people have recovered.

Harare continues to have the highest number of active cases but they are now down to 2 602. Even in Manicaland the number is down to 849. Manicaland had the highest number of deaths today at 7.

Bulawayo now has 440 active cases.

Acting President Constantino Chiwenga, who is also Minister of Health, today said even though the numbers were falling the lockdown was being extended because Zimbabweans were still dying.

“Any death is one death too many,” Chiwenga said. “Still, we need to stay the course by upping our vigilance. The war is not yet won.”
