COPAC campaign starts today

The Constitution Select Committee will today launch its publicity campaign for people to vote for a new constitution in a referendum scheduled for 16 March.

The campaign is expected to run for two weeks. COPAC is expected to distribute 20 000 printed copies of the summary of the new constitution in each province as well as 10 000 copies of the draft constitution.

The summary will be available in all indigenous languages and in Braille while the complete draft will be in the two main vernacular languages, Shona and Ndebele.

The National Constitutional Assembly filed an urgent application to stop the referendum last week but it case was postponed to today.

NCA chairman Lovemore Madhuku argued that the time set for the referendum was grossly inadequate in light of the importance and complexity of the opinion being sought from voters.

He also argued that no official copy of the draft constitution had been distributed. There were no translated versions of the draft constitution and no simplified versions.
