Confusion reigns over doctors’ strike

Confusion reigns over whether the month-long strike by Zimbabwe’s doctors is still on or off after a meeting between association representatives and the First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa yesterday.

The First Lady said the doctors had agreed to return to work while their grievances were being sorted out.

The president of the association Elias Muzoremba said they had agreed “in principle” but would consult their members.

Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association secretary Mthabisi Bhebhe said members of the executive had met the First Lady but no agreement was reached. The strike was therefore still on.

The Ministry of Information this morning said “there have been further positive developments in ending the junior doctors’ strike”.

It said details are to follow and thanked “everyone who has worked on this in the national interest”.

Meanwhile the government is to meet representatives of all associations that represent civil servants on Monday.

The government will send the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare; the Minister of Finance; the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education; the Minister of Higher Education; and the chairman of the Public Service Commission.
