With 11 months to go before the presidential elections, the opposition Movement for Democratic Change should expect some of its members to defect to ZANU-PF and this will receive good airplay on radio and television as well as in the pro-government media.
From the 1980’s ZANU-PF has always made sure it infiltrated opposition parties, not just at grassroots level but at the highest level, in the executive committee, so that it would have reliable information about how the opposition was faring at the highest level.
The MDC was no exception. While the defections will be stage-managed for maximum effect, some things will never be told. The Insider understands, for example, that the central intelligence organisation infiltrated the MDC at its inception but is failing to pull back one of its key operatives.
Whispers say the operative was planted into the organisation at the working people’s convention stage which spearheaded the formation of the party. But things went too far. The operative was elected an MP for the opposition, still working for the agency, but is now believed to have defected to the party after realising that it is the party of the future.
Whispers say the agency has even given up on the MP. Apparently the MP is not the only person to have been infiltrated into the organisation. When the MDC elected its interim executive one of the members was also allegedly a CIO operative, but the operative was dumped when the proper executive was elected.
One of the MDC leaders admitted to knowing that the operative was indeed a plant. With everyone trying to cash in on the popularity of the MDC, a lot more operatives might end up ditching their masters, and no one will ever know as they cannot expose themselves.
But with the desperation within the ruling party to cling on to power, the unthinkable could happen and someone might expose them, just to spite them.
