The budget of the dreaded Central Intelligence Organisation, part of which is not subject to audit by the Controller and Auditor -General, has slightly been reduced indicating that reports that the organisation was being trimmed could be true.
Although the organisation was allocated $70 million for the financial year just ended, they ended up using $79.9 million. Despite this increase of almost $10 million their budget for this year has been fixed at $79.5 million.
While the saving may appear to be a mere $400 000, sight should not be lost of the fact that this year’s allocation includes the proposed salary increases and severance payments for those who might be retrenched.
The number of posts in the Office of the President and Cabinet, under which the CIO falls, has also dropped from 722 last year to 584.
