Chinotimba causes a stir after he says he wants to be mayor of Harare

Buhera South legislator Joseph Chinotimba caused a stir in Parliament on Wednesday when he told the House that he should become the mayor of Harare because the Movement for Democratic Change-led council was failing to maintain facilities in this city.

He said this after noting that Parliament building had no water, adding that if the city council had failed “then they should vote for me so that I become the Harare Mayor because the council right now is failing to discharge its duties”.

There was heated debate when Chinotimba, who was debating in Shona, said “chinhu ichi chaora” which literally means thing this is rotten.

Movement for Democratic Change legislators demanded that he withdraw that statement as they argued that he was referring to their party, but Chinotimba insisted he was referring to the toilets that were stinking.

Deputy Speaker Tsitsi Gezi asked Chinotimba to withdraw and he did so reluctantly arguing that no one could bar her from contesting for mayor of Harare.
