Chihuri’s chance

The old proverb, once beaten twice shy, seems to be doing wonders within the police force. After surviving a scandal that nearly cost him the most coveted post in the police force Police Commissioner Augustine Chihuri seems to be now trying to build a strong, credible police force which the nation can be proud of.

The police force had become so corrupt that one of the stories doing the rounds is about an unmarried woman traffic officer who went home only to find her children sitting without anything to eat.

She is said to have only discovered this after she had taken off her uniform. When the children told her there was nothing to eat, she is said to have asked one of the children: “Nditorerewo maoko angu (Go get me my hands)” meaning the white sleeves that traffic police wear.

Within 30 minutes she was back not just with full grocery but with cash to spare. Anyone can guess what happened.

Chihuri now seems to be trying to put a stop to all this. He is now preaching the language that crime does not pay.

His current country tour seems to be paying dividends and he is gaining support from younger officers who passed examinations some years ago but were not promoted because of the absence of a substantive commissioner.
