Charge me or else- Marry Chiwenga says

Marry Mubaiwa, the estranged wife of acting President Constantino Chiwenga, today told the court that she will apply for refusal of further remand if she is not given a trial date when she next appears in court on 14 February.

Marry is facing charges of fraud, money laundering, externalisation and attempted murder. She is currently out on bail.

She has denied the charges arguing that they were levelled against her to force her hand in the divorce case with her husband.

She was arrested in December last year.

Senior Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front officials who were arrested soon after the military intervention of November 2017 like Ignatius Chombo and Kudzai Chipanga are still to stand trial.

Deputy Chief Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza yesterday criticized the police and other law enforcement agents for what she termed “knee-jerk” arrests” because they undermined the confidence of the people in the justice system.

“Knee-jerk arrests only serve to frustrate the ends of justice,” she said.  “The public will consequently feel let down by the system and such a scenario lends credence to the notorious accusations of catch and release.”
