Chamisa instructs mayors and councillors to decisively deal with corruption

Movement for Democratic Change leader Nelson Chamisa today said he is decisively dealing with corruption and has instructed all mayors and councilors to turn the cities and towns that they are running into zones of excellence service delivery.

He made the announcement as the Harare City council released the names of four officials whom it said tried to swindle donors who are bailing out the country from the cholera outbreak which has claimed 30 lives.

The council said the four were: Phillimon Rwafa, a procurement and stores officer; Smart Mhuka, a buyer; Tawanda Marange, a Cadex officer and Tafadzwa Reza, a buyer.

Some critics say the council was forced to take action when one of the major funders of the current cholera outbreak, Strive Masiyiwa, threatened to name and shame the culprits.

Chamisa today tweeted: “DECISIVELY DEALING WITH CORRUPTION.. Reports of corruption in government, both local and national call for strong leadership. In the 28 cities & towns we lead, we’ve instructed all Mayors & Councillors to turn those local authorities into zones of excellence service delivery.”

President Emmerson Mnangagwa also reiterated his commitment to deal with corruption in his State of the Nation Address in Parliament today.

“No person or entity will be allowed to steal, loot or pocket that which belongs to the people of Zimbabwe,” Mnangagwa said.  “No one is above the law. I urge us all, as public officials, to lead by example and be beyond reproach. “
