Chamisa asks: Why would I discuss unannounced results to concede to a mere junior minister?

Movement for Democratic Change leader Nelson Chamisa today dismissed a report by former Home Affairs Minister Obert Mpofu that he had conceded defeat in the 30 July elections asking why he would do that to a junior minister.

Mpofu told the Kgalema Motlanthe Commission into the violence of 1 August in which six people were killed that he had phoned Chamisa during the demonstrations to calm his supporters down and Chamisa had admitted losing the elections and was asking about the Vice-President’s post.

Mpofu said he had a recording of the conversation with Chamisa and would give it to the commission if it wished.

In a tweet today, Chamisa said: “We’ve penetrated, shaken and defeated forces and kingdoms of darkness.

“It’s not going to be easy. Darkness will try to fight back through lies, falsehoods and deceptive plots. They will fail & lose. One day and soon, Zimbabwe shall be the land of the free, just and happy.#Godisinit.”

Asked by one of his followers about the recorded conversation, Chamisa responded: “Econet is my service provider. His call was never about the result but the people he alleged to be MDC .It was so bizarre to receive a call from Mpofu. This was his first and last call to me up to today. Why would I discuss unannounced results to concede to a mere junior minister?”

The Motlanthe Commission concluded its hearings yesterday and is expected to deliver its report by 19 December.
