Can Obama outlast Mugabe?

President Robert Mugabe has been in power for 32 years. His first decade was blissful. He was the darling of the world. He received so many accolades that he ended up with 18 honorary degrees from all over the world. He was a statesman to emulate.

His star began to fade in the second decade largely because of his controversial land programme.

The third decade was abysmal. Everyone wonders how he survived the onslaught after he was declared by some as the most evil man in the world after Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden.

In a 10 600-word article I explore why and how Mugabe has survived the Western onslaught. Mugabe has outlasted his main rivals, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Australian Prime Minister John Howard and United States President George Bush. This story looks at how he did this and why.

Mugabe even surprised himself because on April 1, 2008, he conceded defeat to Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai. He was supposed to officially announce this on April 2 by giving his concession speech which was to be followed by Tsvangirai’s victory speech.

That never happened. Today Mugabe remains President.
