Bulawayo could lose three constituencies in 2023 elections

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has warned that Bulawayo could lose three constituencies in the 2023 elections if people do not register as voters before the delimitation exercise.

According to Newsday, ZEC provincial elections officer for Bulawayo, Innocent Ncube, said sometimes they failed to register a single voter the whole month.

“People are not coming. On average, we are registering zero a month and this is of serious concern to us. The same also applies when we do outreach sometimes to register residents as voters,” Ncube said.

“We have outreach programmes to register people in their wards, but sadly, very few people come. They do not come forward to register and when they do come, at most, it will be less than five people during the whole outreach.”

Bulawayo, which is dominated by the Movement for Democratic Change, has 12 constituencies. In last year’s elections the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front won only one seat, Bulawayo South, which went to businessman Rakeshkumar Modi.

Ncube said it would be a terrible blow for Bulawayo to lose three constituencies as this would also mean that funds channelled for the city’s development through the Constituency Development Fund would be reduced.
