Britain keeping tabs on Zimbabwe

Britain is keeping regular contact with the Southern African Development Community to make sure that terms of the Global Political Agreement are implemented and that the deteriorating political situation is addressed.

This was said by Henry Bellingham, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Africa and the United Nations, who added that the Britain fully supported the crucial role of SADC as guarantor of the GPA.

He also said Britain welcomed the committed leadership of South African President Jacob Zuma in securing a roadmap to credible and properly monitored election in Zimbabwe.

The SADC troika is to meet in Zambia next week to discuss Zimbabwe. President Zuma is to send his facilitation team to Harare this week.

Bellingham said there had been considerable progress on the economic front since the formation of the inclusive government in Zimbabwe but there was very little progress on the political front.

Britain devoted two hours to debate the situation in Zimbabwe in the House of Lords on 10 March.

Here is the entire debate.
