Britain appoints new ambassador to Zimbabwe

Britain has appointed Melanie Robison as its new ambassador to Zimbabwe but she will only assume office in January.

She replaces Catriona Laing who has been posted to Nigeria where he takes office on 1 November.

Robinson has been the World Bank Group Washington executive director for the UK since 2015.

Prior to that she worked for the Department for International Development in various capacities from 2000 until her appointment to the World Bank Group.

Her only break was in 2009 -2010 when she was Head of International Climate Policy with the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Laing has been in Zimbabwe since 2014 and of late has been accused of being too close to the Zimbabwe government especially President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.

She caused a storm when she was pictured wearing a scarf that has become Mnangagwa’s trade mark leading the opposition to accuse her of having a soft spot for the Zimbabwean leader.
